Moscow and Magas Try to Intimidate Ingush Opposition without Success

Paul Goble

Staunton, July 12 – Given the fears of officials that the Ingush population won’t vote the way the powers that be want in September, Moscow and Magas are trying to intimidate opposition figures in that North Caucasus republic by sending groups of people to opposition offices and posting on line to demand the opposition back off.

Opposition figures have reported both but say that the actions of the authorities are not having the desired effect because they only highlight the desperation that those in power apparently feel and the certainty that election results will be falsified (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/365895/, kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/365927/  and fortanga.org/2021/07/ingushskie-aktivisty-rasskazali-o-popytke-davleniya-na-nih-so-storony-vlasti/).

The trial of the Ingush Seven continued but the government failed to offer any witnesses who could speak to the issue of their guilt. Lawyers for the Seven said the government is simply trying to delay any conclusion of the case lest it spart a new round of protests (fortanga.org/2021/07/zashhita-liderov-ingushskogo-protesta-mitingi-v-magase-provodilis-v-pravovom-pole/ and fortanga.org/2021/07/zashhita-liderov-ingushskogo-protesta-zayavila-o-zatyagivanii-proczessa/).
