Staunton, Mar. 12 – Aleksandr Shulzhenko, a lifelong Ukrainian policeman who has been working for the breakaway Donetsk Peoples Republic since 2014 and now is maintaining order in a village near Mariupol, tells the URA.ru news agency that he expects some partisan resistance in his area and serious partisan activity in the western part of Ukraine.
That the Russian invasion and occupation forces should expect such resistance is no surprise. But that one of their own senior police officers should admit this to a Russian news agency strongly suggests that Moscow is concerned about that possibility and may even want to prepare Russians for the length of the conflict and the casualties that will entail.
While some partisan activity is likely in the eastern portion of Ukraine where Shulzhenko is working, he says that “in the west of Ukraine, in Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil, a real partisan war awaits our soldiers … It will be difficult. But we will carry out the de-Nazification of Ukraine to the end and restore peace on our land” (ura.news/articles/1036284140).
He says that members of the Ukrainian military may blend in with the local population, much of which is “infected” with radical nationalism, and attack Russian officials anywhere in Ukraine. As a result, even in his location, police and other officials are not allowed to go out alone but only in groups of two or more and a curfew is in effect.
