Staunton, July 20 – At a time when Vladimir Putin is arguing that Russia has had its fill of revolutions, Russians are behaving in a variety of ways that suggest another revolution may very well be on its own. The most intriguing of these is a radical rise in public interest in esoterica, a pattern that recalls the dominant trend before 1917,
According to The Insider journalist Lyubov Vinogradova, this year has seen a sharp increase in demand for courses on astrology, fortune telling, numerology, and magic online, a 105 percent growth in purchases of tarot cards and a 95 percent increase in purchases of amulets (theins.ru/history/262412).
Such a retreat from rationality into the occult resembles what happened at the end of the Russian Empire when people from Nicholas II on down turned to esoterica and the occult to try to make sense of where things were going as Vinogradova describes in detail. That they are doing so again suggests that Russians are doing something similar now.
