Staunton, Nov. 26 – Russian crowd control technologies have generally followed those developed in the West and in China, with more armor and the mounting of water cannon on existing vehicles, but a new one, called ‘the Turtle’ (Cherepakha) is being described as a breakthrough.
Developed by the Kabardino-Balkar Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Nalchik, the mobile unit is controlled by radio signals, can go into crowds and even, when used in collections, surround them and use electro shocks to disable people those making use of them specify (https://versia.ru/razgonyat-mitingi-i-podavlyat-besporyadki-budut-roboty).
The Turtle is still in development, but Russian siloviki are excited about the possibilities this technology offer, allowing very small groups of police and military to deal with large protests and with little risk to their lives. As a result, the Versiya portal reports, it is already being described as “a breakthrough.”
