If Kyiv Ends Ukrainian Language Dubbing of Foreign Films, Ukraine will Suffer Immeasurably, Danilenko Says

Staunton, June 28 – To find money to support the war effort, some in Kyiv want to end the practice of dubbing foreign language films into Ukrainian; but that would be a horrific mistake because such dubbing “has done more for the development of Ukrainian than all the institutes of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences taken together, Tatyana Danilenko says.

The Ukrainian journalist and blogger says that ending the requirement that foreign films by dubbed in Ukrainian is about “not just the destruction of an industry and jobs: it is an attack on an important place where Ukrainian is being used” (gordonua.com/blogs/tatyana-danilenko/roskoshnye-kinoperevody-sdelali-dlya-razvitiya-ukrainskogo-yazyka-bolshe-chem-vse-instituty-nan-vmeste-vzyatye-i-seychas-ukrainskiy-dublyazh-hotyat-ubit-1670905.html).

According to Danilenko, the efforts to promote Ukrainian in the schools have in many cases “made children hate it.” But good dubbing of foreign films has “introduced cool Ukrainian phrases and words into wide use.” Thanking those behind this effort is helping the enemies of the Ukrainian language and Ukraine and doing nothing to help Ukrainians and their language.
