Staunton, May 9 – The unsmiling faces of the Putin elite, the absence of any foreign guests, and the lack of any new messages showed if anyone had any doubts that in the Putin regime of today, “the old symbols have died and do not work” and have not been replaced by any new ones that might, Igor Chubais says.
Putin and his team simply have not been able to come up with any and no longer can offer anything other than displays of brute force, something that may impress for a moment but that won’t change any minds, one of Moscow’s most thoughtful commentators argues (kasparov.ru/material.php?id=6279096053171).
Indeed, Chubais says, it is long past time for Russians and everyone else to recognize that in 1945, “the world got rid of Nazism. The West thus reaffirmed democracy but in our country, the accursed system of Stalinism has survived and is being preserved” albeit no longer by any belief but by force alone.
