Staunton, May 4 – The North-Eastern Federal University, with the support of UNESCO, has launched a bilingual, Russian and English, “megapedia” portal which provides background and details on 40 of the numerically smallest peoples of the Russian North, many of whom are on the brink of extinction and about whom few outsiders know.
The portal, located online at https://arctic-megapedia.com/, features information on the history, economic activity and demographics of these groups, something that will simultaneously be useful to those focusing on the Arctic peoples and also help attract the attention to the plight of many of them and thus help them and their unique cultures and languages to survive.
Now, whenever anyone hears a mention of the existence or this or that people in the region, there is an easy way to find out background about them. It will be intriguing to see whether these pages will be updated, a prospect that in and of itself could say a lot about the future of these nations.
