No Longer Any Doubt that FSB has Officers Who Carry Out Political Murders for the Kremlin, Guriyev Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, December 21 – The revelations from the investigation of the poisoning of opposition leader Aleksey Navalny leave no doubt that within Russia’s FSB, there is a group of officers who carry out political murders” for the Kremlin, according to Sergey Guriyev, a Russian political scientist at the Sciences Po in Paris.

“It seems to me,” he told Ekho Moskvy, “that all this was obvious not only a week ago but already in August. But now there are no doubts that there is a group of FSB officers who fulfill political murders. And this is really a horrific fact, but I do not see another realistic version which could refute it” (echo.msk.ru/news/2761780-echo.html).

Still worse, Guriyev continues, this group within the FSB is able to make use of the resources of “many different organs” in the Russian government, including the transportation police. And that means that “someone is providing coordination of these agencies from above” even the pay grade of the director of the FSB itself.

“It is thus difficult to imagine that these officers acted with the use of chemical weaponry without an order from the FSB leadership and it is difficult to imagine that the FSB leadership acted without an order from above.” And above the FSB, of course, is only Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin.

The Paris-based Russian scholar says he is confident that ever more details about this will leak out in the coming weeks and that “we will find out still more new and interesting information about this group which the FSB uses to kill its political opponents” and the opponents of the regime as a whole.
