Staunton, March 20 – After numerous reports that the northern capital was running out of the coronavirus vaccine, Moscow organized a rare Saturday delivery of 15,300 units so that inoculations could continue (kommersant.ru/amp/4739587 and regnum.ru/news/3220721.html). But there are no reports that other regions running short have received similar treatment.
The World Health Organization’s Moscow representative noted today that the pandemic is easing in Russia, but it added that the number of Russians who have received the vaccine is still too small to stop the further spread of the coronavirus or prevent new spikes in the future (rbc.ru/society/19/03/2021/60547a279a7947de3c0f9bab).
As the pandemic continued to ease overall although with significant hotspots remaining in the regions, the Russian government reported registering 9632 new cases of infection and 392 new deaths from the coronavirus (t.me/COVID2019_official/2634 and regnum.ru/news/society/3217850.html).
Meanwhile, in other pandemic-related news from Russia today,
· Two of Russia’s air carriers announced that they had made a profit during the pandemic eyar by offering low prices and getting sufficient government subsidies. They are Pobeda and Azimut (rbc.ru/business/20/03/2021/6054a6529a7947f8bee3c248).
· Russian siloviki are now monitoring fans at sports facilities to ensure they are wearing masks. It is beginning to be more difficult to get into a stadium than to cross the border, some commentators say (svpressa.ru/sport/article/293045/).
· And the Russian government has agreed to allow foreign students from countries where the infection rate is low to return to their studies in Russia (regnum.ru/news/3220516.html).
