Russians Outraged by Report Kyiv Plans to Restrict Their Visits to Ukraine Because of Covid

Paul Goble

Staunton, July 18 – The Russian Internet has been filled with expressions of outrage after a Moscow official said that Kyiv plans to impose tough new restrictions on Russians travelling to Ukraine because of the rising tide of coronavirus infections and deaths in the Russian Federation (regnum.ru/news/3324729.html).

Meanwhile, Russian officials reported registering 25,018 new cases of infection and 764 new deaths form the coronavirus, the latter figure continuing a pattern of more than 700 daily deaths since July 6 as the pandemic continues to increase in intensity across Russia (t.me/COVID2019_official/3317, versia.ru/chislo-skonchavshixsya-v-rossii-ot-covid-19-naxoditsya-na-maksimume and regnum.ru/news/society/3324376.html).

And epidemiologists at the Pasteur Institute in St. Petersburg said that the combination of still low vaccination rates and rising infections from which most recover mean that Russia now has on the order of 60 percent collective or “herd” immunity, something that should slow the spread of the disease soon (regnum.ru/news/3324969.html).

In other pandemic-related developments in Russia today,

·         Many Russians are expressing their anger at the government for failing to block the Yekaterinburg march in honor of the murder of the Imperial Family given that the authorities are restricting so many other events (regnum.ru/news/3324731.html).

·         Fraudsters are now selling on line “secret tablets” that offer to cure covid but in fact do nothing except extract money from the gullible (kp.ru/daily/28305.5/4445887/).

·         Half of all Russian businessmen say they expect a new lockdown sometime soon and 62.3 percent of them are already taking measures to be ready (krizis-kopilka.ru/archives/86711).
