Staunton, Dec. 14 – Twelve members of the Ukrainian parliament representing three different parties including the ruling Servant of the People one have formed Free Icherkia, an inter-fractional deputies group, under the leadership of Aleksandr Merzhko to promote Chechen freedom and to cooperate with Chechen émigré organizations.
The group is committed to and will seek to promote the recognition of the sovereignty of the Chechen Republic Ichkeria, the recognition of the illegitimacy of Ramzan Kadyrov, and the recognition that Chechens have been victims of a Russian-led genocide (kavkazr.com/a/v-parlamente-ukrainy-poyavilosj-deputatskoe-obedinenie-svobodnaya-ichkeriya-/32176010.html).
This action follows the formation of another such group, For a Free Caucasus, in June (kavkazr.com/a/deputat-iz-ukrainy-raskritikoval-v-strasburge-politiku-rossii-na-severnom-kavkaze/31911269), the Verkhovna Rada’s declaration that Chechnya is a territory under temporary Russian occupation in October (windowoneurasia2.blogspot.com/2022/10/eastern-european-and-baltic-countries.html), and President Volodmyr Zelensky’s call for a study on the recognition of Chechnya the same month (windowoneurasia2.blogspot.com/2022/11/zelensky-orders-study-on-extending.html).
These actions have encouraged Chechens and led other non-Russian groups to make appeals to Kyiv (windowoneurasia2.blogspot.com/2022/10/tatar-exile-government-seeks-ukrainian.html).
