International Groups Call for Release of Ingush Detainees

Paul Goble

Staunton, July 24 – The Committee for the Defense of Journalists is demanding the liberation of Ingush journalist Rashid Maysigov and Reporters without Borders has made similar appeals for him and for Zarifa Sautiyeva (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/338222/ and rsf.org/en/news/russian-authorities-persecute-ingush-news-website).

Such declarations show that international attention to the crackdown in that North Caucasus republic is increasing the longer the authorities engage in repressive actions against those whose actions cannot be dismissed as ethnic activism. And because of these appeals, international media attention is increasing as well.

Both these developments increase the cost that Moscow and Magas are having to pay for their actions.

Meanwhile, Ingush activist Baraduin Myakiev who said he had been tortured has demanded that he receive medical attention, something his jailors have not yet provided (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/338270/), and Nalchik jailors are preventing relatives of Sautiyeva from visiting her, her lawyer reports (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/338228/).
