With War Raging in Neighboring Ukraine, Transdniestria Presses for Recognition as an Independent State

Paul Goble

Staunton, Mar. 5 – Transdniestria, the Slavic-dominated breakaway region in Moldova, is demanding that the Moldovan government enter into negotiations about a civilized “divorce” and that the international community recognize it as an independent state lest events in Ukraine lead to provocations by Moldovan or Ukrainian forces against it.

The suggestion that Moldovan or Ukrainian forces are planning to engage in provocations, of course, is a smokescreen designed to justify a possible Russian move to recognize Transdniestria as independent and then use it as a base for further Russian aggression against Ukraine from the West in the direction of Odesa.
