West Unprepared for Approaching End of the Russian Federation, Almanis Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, Oct. 7 – The Russian Federation is “an artificial formation” and will fall apart as soon as the center weakens and loses authority, Andrius Almanis says. That is the result of internal forces in the regions and republics and in no way the product of outside interference. But a Russian defeat in Ukraine will radically accelerate the country’s disintegration.

The director of the independent Vilnius Institute for the Study of the Regions of Russia says that Russian officials are already alarmed by that prospect but that Western governments have not recognized the likelihood of this outcome because they know far too little about what is going on outside of Moscow (idelreal.org/a/32068054.html).

If the West was paying more attention, it would be better positioned to respond to this development and make positive outcomes more likely and negative ones less so. And it could even come up with educational programs and a Marshal Plan for the regions and republics, programs that both the regions and republics and the West would benefit from.
