Prigozhin Rising Showed Moscow and Other Russian Rear Areas Nearly Defenseless

Paul Goble

Staunton, June 29 – Perhaps the most dramatic thing the Prigozhin rising revealed is that neither Moscow nor any other Russian rear area has any adequate defense if military forces break through border areas, Vyacheslav Yepuryanu says. But that is only one of ten realities that the conflict revealed, according to The Insider analyst.

The other nine for which he provides detailed sourcing are as follows (theins.ru/politika/262986):

1.     Kadyrov’s much ballyhooed forces can move quickly when they want to but only very slowly when they don’t.

2.     Many Russian siloviki surrendered at the first sign of threat and refused to carry out orders.

3.     Moscow has demonstrated that it is really prepared to “bomb Voronezh” as the Russian meme has it.

4.     It is far from easy for Russian airpower to stop an armored column moving along main highways.

5.     Putin’s word is above the law, given how he first threatened to bring down all the power of the state against the Wagnerites and then forgave them all.

6.     Russian soldiers can be killed by Wagnerites without any serious consequences.

7.     The GRU has been working with the Wagner PMC since 2014 even though Putin has denied this and such a PMC is illegal.

8.     The Russian defense ministry is hiding the bodies of soldiers killed in Ukraine to avoid having to explain why so many have died.
