Putin’s Ratings Fell 9-14 Percent after Prigozhin Mutiny, Regional Officials Tell Kremlin

Paul Goble

Staunton, June 29 – Russia’s pollsters report that their surveys did not show any decline in public support for Vladimir Putin as a result of his handling of the Prigozhin mutiny, but representatives of Russian regions have told the Kremlin that his support has fallen by nine to 14 percent among their populations.

They presented these figures at a video conference that the Presidential Administration organized. Two participants in the meeting reported the numbers to Ukraine’s Meduza news agency (meduza.io/feature/2023/06/29/sotsiologi-govoryat-chto-myatezh-ne-obrushil-reytingi-prezidenta-rossii-odnako-regionalnye-politiki-rasskazali-meduze-chto-v-kremle-im-soobschayut-o-padenii-urovnya-doveriya-putinu-na-9-14).

Participants also reportedly said that Prigozhin’s actions had not affected the rating of United Russia, the Russian government or the heads of Russian regions; and they noted that Putin’s rating in this case had fallen approximately the same amount as it did after he raised the pension age in 2018.

A third participant, who did not provide Meduza with any numbers, nonetheless said that the Kremlin recognizes that in the wake of the Prigozhin affair, “there are problems” that Moscow must address.
