… And on the 8th Day, God Created Russia as a Separate Civilization, One Filled with Unique Spirituality and whose Temporary Problems are Invariably Permanent

Paul Goble

Staunton, Jan. 2 – Everyone knows that God created the world in six days and then decided to rest. But few remember that on the eighth, he got bored and decided to continue by creating Russia as a distinctive civilization with a special spirituality and temporary problems that would invariably become permanent.

That is just one of the anecdotes Russians are now telling each other to explain why their lives are like they are. These have been collected by Moscow journalist Tatyana Pushkaryova (publizist.ru/blogs/107374/47462/-). Among the best of the rest are the following:

·       Moscow’s pledge to punish all those who attacked Donetsk has prompted Russians to ask whether everyone involved in the attacks on Ukrainian cities will be punished as well.

·       What has been dead for a long time cannot die.

·       A Russian missile fired at Ukraine fell on a Russian village 250 kilometers from the Ukrainian border and set a Voronezh village afire.

·       In these difficult times, Russia needs unity. The people have promised unity and the authorities have guaranteed the difficult times.

·       Russians who think the government doesn’t love the people need only watch television to have that concern dissipate in the face of others.

·       Moscow wants to substitute Western music with Chinese, Iranian and North Korean variants. Russians want to know whether they will be able to live with such substitutions.

·       Before 1939, a German teacher told his students that “the Poles provoked us for so many years that Germany had no choice but to respond with force” – exactly the same thing Putin is saying about Ukraine today. Is this a joke - or such an unimaginably wonderful life?
