Staunton, Mar. 16 – Kremlin media have sought to downplay attempts by Russians to spoil their ballots or set fire to polling stations and to suggest that these were the work of Ukrainian agents or Russians led astray by such agents (moscowtimes.ru/2024/03/16/imrazve-nestrashno-pochemu-lyudi-podzhigayut-izbirkomi-otvet-psihologa-a124651).
But Russian commentator Abbas Gallyamov argues that these attacks reflect the frustrations Russian feel about not having any real choice and thus are becoming an entirely a “natural” part of the political landscape rather than the result of actions by any outsiders (t.me/mozhemobyasnit/17428).
An indication he is correct and that Kremlin media are wrong is provided by an updated listing compiled by journalists of the Horizontal Russia portal of where there have been attacks on polling stations across the country (semnasem.org/articles/2024/03/16/popytki-massovo-isportit-byulleteni-i-podzhech-uchastki-spisok-7h7).
The listing, which is being updated as more information becomes available, is likely to prove especially useful to future research on Russian elections because each of the incidents Horizontal Russia reports includes a reference to materials that have appeared about it in independent media.
