Staunton, Nov. 10 – On November 5, Ruslan Perelygin, a opposition legislator in Oryol, used AI to create a clip showing protesters denouncing the local mayor for a variety of crimes and demanding his ouster, a creative use of new technology to protest at a time when genuine demonstrations are almost invariably illegal and subject to harsh punishments.
The AI generated clip showed people holding signs denouncing the mayor of numerous misdeeds and demanding that he resign from office forthwith. The clip is available at t.me/spravdep/1804 and is discussed in detail at semnasem.org/articles/2025/11/10/nejroseti-v-regionalnoj-politike).
The mayor’s supporters are furious, but they haven’t taken action because as yet there is no provision in the Russian criminal code that would allow them to do so (kommersant.ru/doc/8191814). Perelygin says that if the government does make such things illegal, he will stop; but for the time being, he appears to believe the will spread.
