Having Blamed the Poles for World War II by Their Resistance to Hitler, Putin May Soon Blame the Jews for the Holocaust, Some Russians Say

Paul Goble

Staunton, Feb. 9 – During his interview with Tucker Carlson, Vladimir Putin said that the Poles were to blame for the beginning of World War II in Europe because they did not peacefully yield to Hitler’s demands. Given that view, some Russians are saying, the Kremlin leader may soon blame the Jews for the Holocaust.

That is just one of the anecdotes in the latest collection offered by Moscow journalist Tatyana Pushkaryova (publizist.ru/blogs/107374/47739/-). Among the best of the rest are the following:

·       Now that Ilham Aliyev has won re-election with 93.9 percent of the vote, Putin will have to get at least 99.9 percent lest he lose face to the Azerbaijani leader.

·       Kremlin propagandists have a problem: they need to make it appear there is a real election going on when in fact the powers that be have eliminated all the real competitors to Putin.

·       Given the precise numbers that regional officials are giving for collapses in communal services, it appears that everything there is also going according to plan – yet another triumph of the Kremlin leader’s approach in Ukraine.

·       Putin’s views as expressed to Tucker Carlson can be summed up in a single sentence: “History isn’t about how it was, but about how it should have been.”

·       Putin wanted  his interview with Carlson to go on even longer than he did and complained to aides that he hadn’t had a chance to talk about gender neutral toilets.

·       School history textbooks are having to be rewritten again now that Putin has spoken.
