Moscow’s Promotion of Teenage Pregnancies to Boost Birthrate Leading to Spread of STDs

Paul Goble

Staunton, Aug. 19 – Primorsky Kray in the Russian Far East is one of the federal subjects that has promoted teenage pregnancies in an effort to meet Moscow’s demands that the regions boost the birthrate. The birthrate there has gone up slightly, but a survey has found that the number of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) has more than doubled this year over last.

While the figures for this kray are small, it is likely that other federal subjects are experiencing the same pattern, with birthrates up slightly but at the cost of an increase in STDs. If that is so, what the Kremlin is likely to celebrate – higher birthrates – has had the high price of the spread of illnesses that often are not treated early because of shame.

On this problem, see nemoskva.net/2025/08/19/novyj-proryv-v-bitve-za-rozhdaemost-v-primorskom-krae-v-dva-s-polovinoj-raza-vyroslo-chislo-podrostkov-s-polovymi-infekcziyami/). As this becomes known, many regions are likely to come under pressure to end such programs, eliminating one more way the Kremlin had hoped would help solve its birthrate problem (windowoneurasia2.blogspot.com/2025/06/opposition-to-subsidizing-teenage.html).
