Russians Now Hold NATO Countries Slightly More Responsible than Ukraine for Drone Attacks on Russia, Laboratory of the Future Survey Finds

Paul Goble

Staunton, Oct. 12 – Relatively few Russians blame companies for failing to protect them against drone attacks, more blame Ukraine, but even more Russians are now inclined to blame NATO countries which have supplied Kyiv with arms and intelligence information needed to carry out such attacks, a Laboratory of the Future Survey finds.

Sociologists Elena Panfilova and Aleksey Levinson report that relatively few Russians view either the Russian military or the owners of plants for their failure to block the attacks and most divided between those who blame Ukraine – 29 percent – and those who blame NATO – 30 percent (novayagazeta.ru/articles/2026/10/12/ono-prosto-priletaet).

Given that Russia is at war with Ukraine and that Kyiv is launching the drone attacks on Russia, blaming Ukraine is perhaps most natural; but blaming NATO shows just how much the Kremlin’s effort to reframe the conflict has succeeded, although it is noteworthy that some Russians, admittedly only a few percent, still blame Moscow for failing to block the attacks.
