Staunton, June 11 -- Major General Mikhail Korobkin has been named
to replace Dmitry Kava who resigned last spring after some of his officers
refused orders to move to attack demonstrators against Yunus-Bek Yevkurov’s
border deal with Chechnya’s Ramzan Kadyrov (stav.aif.ru/society/law/v_ingushetii_naznachili_novogo_glavu_mvd_vmesto_dmitriya_kavy).
The delay suggests there may have
been significant tensions behind the scenes about how a new outsider might
behave and whether he would have the necessary authority over local police.
Meanwhile, the siloviki raided the mufiate’s offices and the home of the mufti
(kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/336557/ and
kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/336557/).
The Kavkaz-Uzel news agency says
that “no fewer than 96 activists have been subjected to persecutions after the mass
March protests in Ingushetia. At least 29 of them have been charged with
crimes. Eighty two have been detained and no fewer than 24 activists remain
behind bars at the present time” (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/336534/).
Tensions remain very high in
Ingushetia. On the one hand, a traffic police officer shot a local man who was hospitalized
as a result (stav.kp.ru/online/news/3504544/).
And on the other, the Ingush branch of the Yabloko Party announced it was
boycotting all elections in Ingushetia as part of its campaign against
political repressions (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/336534/).
