Kremlin Sets Up Internet Portal to Help Regional Leaders Calm Population and Respond to Sanctions

Paul Goble

Staunton, Mar. 2 – Regional leaders are now having to cope with three challenges: the arrival of refugees, the minimization of the consequences of Western sanctions, and the maintenance of popular support for Moscow’s policies. To aid them, the Kremlin has set up a new Internet portal, “Let Us Explain” (объясняем.рф.).

These regional leaders must also work to promote a reduction in social decisions and deal with the work of anti-terrorist committees in their areas “in connect with the potential provocations and possible terrorist acts.” And at the same time, no one has lifted their duties in keeping health care functioning, officials and experts say (regnum.ru/news/polit/3521786.html).

Balancing all these tasks will be difficult for many, but none will succeed, Moscow analysts argue, unless the central government clearly specifies what it wants and provides the resources for the heads of regions and republics to perform their jobs. On that, the future of the country depends.
