It’s Very Russian to Complain to Putin about Putin Policies But Then There’s No Higher Authority, Russians Say

Paul Goble

Staunton, Dec. 7 – Russians are now complaining to Putin about Putin’s order to use wounded soldiers to try to take Avdievka before Putin’s direct line broadcast happens. It is very Russian to complain to Putin about Putin, some Russians say. After all, there is no higher authority available.

That is just one of the new anecdotes Moscow journalist Tatyana Pushkaryova offers in her latest collection (publizist.ru/blogs/107374/47281/-). Among the best of the rest are the following:

·       Russians will no longer be able to get out of military service because of many common health complaints. That will save the government money. After all, if someone with only one leg can serve, the government won’t have to pay for two shoes.

·       Russia needs to introduce football-style video replays in politics. Then, when the Kremlin pushes through a law at odds with what it has promised, the referees can reverse the law and even call for new elections.

·       A Ukrainian mayor can complain that his president is isolated and authoritarian; his Russian counterparts wouldn’t dare.

·       The Duma has given Russians a real Christmas present: it will take two additional days of vacation, thus limiting the time it will have to introduce new bans and make ridiculous statements of all kinds.

·       When Hennessy representatives visited a liquor store in Samara, they found that there were more bottles of its product on the shelves than the company has ever produced. Who says that Russia has failed at import substitution?
