‘New Normal’ for Russia Not Sovereign Democracy but Fascism, El Murid Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, April 28 -- Anatoly Nemiyan, a specialist on the Muslim world who blogs under the screen name “El Murid,” says that Russian consumer protection chief Anna Popova is completely correct when she says that after the pandemic, Russians must be prepared to live under “a new normality.”

She said that on Russia-1 yesterday (gazeta.ru/social/2020/04/27/13064653.shtml), and El Murid says that what it means is that this new normality represents among everything else the passing of “sovereign democracy” as the self-definition of Russia today and the appearance of fascism with the assistance of the coronavirus (kasparov.ru/material.php?id=5EA84AC9987D9).

Judging from everything, the outspoken blogger continues, “contemporary fascism will be established within the framework of medical terror, where phobias and the total illiteracy of the population on issues of the personal security of their health will be used as an instrument of intimidation.”

As he points out, “the very best terror is when people themselves create the frameworks within which they agree to exchange their rights and freedoms.” Medicine can play that role, but in the process, it is transformed from “the most humane profession” into “a powerful terrorist instrument of control over society.”

That process may not be easy to carry out, El Murid concedes; but every step in that direction will cost society dearly.
