Staunton, June 25 – An interactive
online map showing the location of hate crimes committed on an ethnic, racial
or other basis in the Russian capital is now online. Prepared by the SOVA
Analytic Center and the Civic Initiative Committee, it allows users to find out
details about particular crimes and post additional information about them.
Its creators hope the map, available
at hatecrimes.ru/map/,
will allow them to make contact with those who have suffered from such attacks
and to provide them with medical or legal assistance (nazaccent.ru/content/16528-pravozashitniki-opublikovali-kartu-etnicheskih-napadenij-v.html).n
And the creators added that they
hope that this map “’will not only attract the attention of society to hate
crimes but heighten sensitivity to the subject of acts of force toward specific
groups of citizens.’” Among these have been immigrants from Central Asia,
people from the North Caucasus, and refugees and migrants from Africa, Asia and
the Arab world.
Other victims the location of whose
crimes is shown on the map include Russians of “’non-Slavic appearance,’”
homeless people, gays, lesbians, bisexuals and trans-sexuals, Roma, various
youth groups, as well as “political activists primarily of leftist views.”
