Staunton, May 16 – Yunus-Bek Yevkurov’s
crackdown in Ingushetia continues to expand. Today, he had the son of Zakri
Mamilov, a member of the regional parliament who has opposed the border accord
with Chechnya, arrested in a transparent but failing effort to intimidate his
political opponents (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/335544/).
In addition, the Ingush boss has had
Murad Daskiyev, the acting head of the Council of Teips of Ingushetia, detained
for issuing an appeal to the deputies of the Popular Assembly to oppose
Yevkurov and work to free all political prisoners in the republic (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/335535/
And Yevkurov’s people detained Aslan
Aushev, a resident of Sunzha, on charges that he clashed with officials during
a protest against the border agreement in which Yevkurov gave away 26,000
hectares of land to Chechnya (novayagazeta.ru/news/2019/05/16/151732-v-ingushetii-zaderzhali-esche-odnogo-cheloveka-po-delu-o-stolknovenii-s-silovikami
and kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/335548/).
But these repressive actions are not
having the intended effect of intimidating the opposition. Ismail Nalgiyev who
has been charged with attacking officials has refused to plead guilty or to
give testimony, his lawyer Andrey Sabinin reports (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/335506/ and zamanho.com/?p=7814).
And Akhmed Pogorov, the vice
president of the World Congress of the Ingush People who is now in hiding after
being put on an all-Russian arrest list, continues his activities as if he were
completely free. He has put out another video about the corruption in the
Yevkurov government (fortanga.org/2019/05/video-ahmed-pogorov-prodolzhaet-razoblachat-korruptsiyu-v-rukovodstve-ingushetii/).
