Beijing Expects Russia to Return to Socialism, Moscow Sinologist Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, Dec. 3 – The Chinese authorities expect Russia to return to socialism like the kind Beijing has introduced with some market elements but significant state planning, according to Sergey Sanakoyev, a Russian Sinologist who heads the Moscow Center for Research on the Asia-Pacific Region.

The Chinese believe that Russia’s return to socialism will solidify the relations between the two countries and prevent other countries from playing one of them off against the other, he continues, and their growing role in the Russian economy, filling the niche left with the departure of Russian firms and imports will give them leverage to promote such a development, he suggests (realtribune.ru/sergej-sanakoev-kitaj-zhdet-ot-rossii-vozvrashheniya-k-socializmu).

Sanokoyev makes clear in his interview that he supports the Chinese  position for all the reasons Beijing gives and also because in his view socialism which combines market competition and state planning is a better form of economic and political arrangement than is capitalism. He also discounts any possibility that China and the US can cooperate against Russia.
