Staunton, Aug. 9 – When Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine, he set up two peoples republics with the expectation that the Donetsk and Luhansk statelets would become the basis for reformatting and demise of Ukraine. Now that Ukrainian forces have entered Russia, the Region.Expert portal is asking an analogous question about the future of Russia.
The Tallinn-based Russian regionalist portal edited by Vadim Shtepa argues that Ukraine has “the complete moral right” to help set up a Kursk Peoples Republic given what Moscow did to Kyiv a decade ago when it established the DNR and the LNR to undermine the Ukrainian state (region.expert/kpr/).
Such a move could have enormous long-term consequences, including the eventual proclamation of a Belgorod and Bryansk peoples republic and “the formation of a South-Russian Federation, independent from Moscow but allies with Ukraine,” a development that would “alter the entire political format of the Russian Federation.”
And if that were to happen, Region. Expert says, that could have “a domino effect,” with many other regions now within the Russian Federation expanding their ongoing efforts to “distance themselves from Muscovy.” Such a development would benefit not only Ukraine and Muscovy’s other neighbors but the Russian people as well.
