Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and Stalin Three Most Popular Russian Leaders in New Poll; Yeltsin and Gorbachev Most Unpopular

Paul Goble

Staunton, Aug. 21 – A new Russian Field Poll ordered in advance of the 2024 presidential elections by the Agency for Political and Economic Communications finds that Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and Stalin are the three most popular Russian leaders while Boris Yeltsin and Mikhail Gorbachev are the most unpopular.

Agency head Dmitry Orlov said he was surprised that Stalin wasn’t in first place among the most popular but that the other rankings were fully consistent with other recent polls (kommersant.ru/doc/6172134 and stoletie.ru/lenta/rossijane_vybrali_luchshih_i_khudshih_pravitelej_v_istorii_strany_243.htm https://www.rosbalt.ru/russia/2023/08/21/1993741.html).

These rankings reflect both name recognition and recent Russian government propaganda; but perhaps more interesting is the fact that both Yeltsin and Gorbachev had some who rated them among the best, 17 and 19 percent respectively, and that 61 percent had a positive view of Leonid Brezhnev, 52 percent of Nicholas II and 52 percent of Vladimir Lenin.
