Staunton, April 12 – It is
tragically no surprise that an increasing number of Russians are ignoring
official calls for self-isolation now, Yekaterina Neroznikova says. They have
been lied to so often by the powers that be and by their propagandists that
they see no reason to place any confidence in what they are saying now.
Instead, the regional projects
editor of MBK Media says, they are falling back either on their religious
faith and going to church when they should be staying at home or ignoring what
they are told because they have heard only lies in the past. One can hardly
blame them even though their actions are self-destructive (mbk-news.appspot.com/sences/pandemiya-lzhi-i-repressij/).
Her grandmother isn’t going to
listen to her, the editor says. “She will go to church, to the store and to
visit friends, ignoring any legal bans, and I can understand her. What can one
expect from people who are accustomed to a reality in which the powers do not
give them anything good or at most far less than they deserve?”
And her neighbor is going to
continue to walk about the neighborhood with his friends and dog Chubak
drinking vodka and certain that any viruses that may be out there are the work
of the Americans who want to “destroy the economy and our great country.” That’s
what he has been told on television for years.
“Our regional correspondents,” Neroznikova
continues, talk with ordinary people and ask how they feel about the pandemic,
what they are suffering and how they are solving their problems.” So many of them
either talk about “a conspiracy of the West” against Russia or divine
punishment.
They don’t want to lose their jobs
and they don’t want to have to go to stores in masks. But the past behavior of the powers that be
and their media allies have done everything they could to make this so: Why
should anyone believe them about the coronavirus when they have lied to their
benefit and against the needs of the people so often in the past?
