Staunton, Sept. 29 – Seven out of every nine marriages in Russia now ends in divorce, the third highest national rate in the world behind only the Maldives and Kazakhstan, Putin’s war in Ukraine is pushing the number of divorces up still further, and the Russian government is alarmed because of the impact of this trend on birthrates already below replacement levels.
Among the reasons the war has pushed numbers up is that many married just in advance of deployments, couples disagreed over whether to leave Russia to avoid serving there, and the feeling on the part of one of the partners had betrayed the other while the latter was absent (takiedela.ru/2024/09/budushhie-byvshie/).
Government efforts to counter this trend have been ineffective at best. The regime has raised the cost of registering divorces and is mulling requiring those seeking divorce to go through psychological counseling, but experts say that neither of these things will likely reduce the number of divorces although they may increase popular anger.
