Ingushetia Remains Tense and in Mourning after Police Post Deaths

Paul Goble

Staunton, January 3 – Despite the holiday, Ingushetia remains in mourning after the attack on the police post in Magas which resulted in two deaths. Muslim leaders are trying to comfort people and explain why Islam must never be invoked to commit such senseless violence (gazetaingush.ru/obshchestvo/islam-religiya-dumayushchih-lyudey-religiya-teh-kogo-nelzya-vvesti-v-zabluzhdenie).

Siloviki continue to conduct widespread searches, and there was one report that they had discovered a fake bomb in Nazran. But it is not yet clear what that amounted to and whether it was in any way related to the attack on the police post on New Year’s eve (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/344266/).

In an unrelated but intriguing development, the Aktsenty news group reports that Ingushetia currently has 1485 government employees and spend on each of them 603,000 rubles (9900 US dollars) a year, smaller numbers than all other republics in the North Caucasus except for North Ossetia (facebook.com/groups/2421953458084994/permalink/2529824163964589/).
