Despite Being Smallest, Ingushetia Continues to Lead North Caucasus Republics in Coronavirus Deaths

Paul Goble

Staunton, May 6 – Despite being the smallest republic in the North Caucasus, Ingushetia continues to lead in the number of deaths from the coronavirus pandemic, with 28 of the 1016 people there who have tested positive for the virus dying (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/349228/ and gazetaingush.ru/news/kolichestvo-zarazhennyh-covid-19-v-ingushetii-prevysilo-1-tys-sluchaev).

Many Ingush see this as the result of the poor quality of medical care in the republic or as a reflection of larger epidemiological problems there, although it may also reflect the unwillingness of many there to refrain from attending large weddings and funerals where the coronavirus can spread quite easily.

The republic government for its part has countered by organizing the distribution of 10,000 face masks to the population and a letter-writing campaign in support of medical workers (ingushetia.ru/news/volontery_razdadut_zhitelyam_ingushetii_okolo_10_tys_zashchitnykh_masok/ and ingushetia.ru/news/barkalshoana_desyatki_blagodarstvennykh_pisem_vracham_napisali_zhiteli_ingushetii/).
