Staunton, April 11 – Abdurakhman Martazanov,
who had been mufti of Ingushetia since July 2019, died in hospital from the coronavirus.
He was initially diagnosed with pneumonia but when he was tested for the virus,
it was confirmed that he had it. The mufti is the first Ingush resident to die
in this pandemic.
Republic head Makhmud-Ali Kalimatov
used his Instagram account to express his sympathies to the relatives and friends
of the late mufti. He noted that
Martazanov’s death was “a big loss” for the republic (kavkaz-uzel.eu/articles/348226/, doshdu.com/skonchalsya-muftij-ingushetii-gospitalizirovannyj-s-podozreniem-na-koronovirus/
and gazetaingush.ru/news/kalimatov-vyrazil-soboleznovaniya-rodnym-i-blizkim-uvazhaemogo-bogoslova-abdurahmana).
Relations between the muftiate and
the republic government have not been good. Martazanov’s predecessor, Issa
Khamkoyev, expelled Kalimatov’s predecessor from the umma, and Yevkurov openly
campaigned to have Khamkoyev removed and the muftiate suppressed. But the
relations of the powers with Martazanov have not been smooth.
He was republic kady under
Khamkoyev, and the authorities raided his home as well as that of Khamkoyev in
June 2019. Who will replace him is an
open question, but it is clear that Kalimatov hopes whoever it is will have a
better relations with his regime (windowoneurasia2.blogspot.com/2019/07/ingush-mufti-who-actively-opposed.html).
