Former Sochi Olympics Official Named Curator for Nationality Policy in New Russian Government

Staunton, January 28 – Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko will serve as curator for nationality policy in the new Russian government according to the division of responsibilities announced by new Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin (government.ru/gov/responsibilities/).  He replaces Vitaly Mutko in that capacity.

Curiously, Chernyshenko, like Mutko, was deeply involved with the Sochi Olympiad. Mutko, of course, became notorious for his involvement in the Russian doping scandal. Chernyshenko in contrast was head of the Sochi Olympics organizing committee (nazaccent.ru/content/32086-nacionalnuyu-politiku-v-pravitelstve-budet-kurirovat.html).

The new curator will oversee the work of the culture ministry, the communications ministry, the Federal Agency for Nationality Affairs, and other government bodies involved with state policy in this regard. But migration issues will be overseen by Tatyana Golikova, and issues involving the Far East, the North Caucasus and the Far North by Yury Trutnyev.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin has named former culture minister Vladimir Medinsky to be his special advisor on the Russian world and so will likely play a major role in the formation of nationality policy as well (kasparov.ru/material.php?id=5E302EEF6EB76).
